A second ropeway on Lake Ashi

Most visitors know the Hakone Ropeway over Owakudani, but Lake Ashi has another. The Hakone Komagatake Ropeway runs 1,800 m from Hakone-en Station on the shore of Lake Ashi to the summit station of Mount Komagatake, in 7 minutes.1 The Hakone Tourist Association names Hakone-en, alongside Togendai, as a port where a ropeway connects with the lake.6

It belongs to a different company from the cruise. Hakone-en is run by Seibu Prince Hotels, so its ropeway, aquarium and motorboats sit outside the Odakyu network of the pirate ships and the Hakone Ropeway.7 The Hakone Free Pass lists the Odakyu Hakone transport it covers, and the Komagatake ropeway is not among them.8

The coach day this site is built around mentions this ropeway too. Its description says that, depending on the schedule for the day, the ropeway part of the tour takes place on Mount Hakone or on Mount Hakone-Komagatake. Either way you ride a ropeway with views of the lake before the cruise. You will not know which one in advance, so read both of our ropeway pages if you are on that tour.

The summit and the Ashi no Sora deck

Mount Komagatake is a grassy mountain, kept bare by its harsh, windswept setting, which is why the views from the top are so open.10 The summit area reopened in April 2025 as Hakone Komagatake Ashi no Sora, a viewing area designed around the scenery.3 Up here the wind is the main character: the summit is exposed on every side, and even a warm day at the lake can feel cool on the deck.

Stepping out of the summit station you reach a deck of about 400 square meters, with a section that projects about 3 m above the ground.11 From the top the operator lists Lake Ashi and the outer rim, Mount Fuji, Sagami Bay and Suruga Bay, and on clear days the Yokohama Landmark Tower and Tokyo Skytree.12

In its English description the operator lists Mount Fuji, with the Izu Peninsula, the Shonan coast and the Boso Peninsula in the distance.5 Kamiyama, the highest peak in Hakone, rises next door.13 The Hakone Tourist Association notes that the trails up Kamiyama from Komagatake are often closed for visitor safety, so check before planning a walk.14

The shrine on the summit

The top of the ropeway is also a place of worship. Hakone Mototsumiya, the inner shrine of Hakone Shrine, stands on the summit of Komagatake, facing the sacred peak of Kamiyama.4 The Hakone Mototsumiya shrine was rebuilt in 1964.4

Hakone-en lists monthly festivals on the 1st and 24th and the Gojinkasai fire festival on 24 October.23 Odakyu Hakone also lists the Motomiya Reisai festival on Komagatake on 24 October.24 If you are in Hakone that day, expect the summit shrine to be the center of the festival.

Together with Hakone Shrine by the lake and Kuzuryu Shrine on the shore, the summit shrine is one of three that belong together.2526 Amulets and shrine seals for all three are given out at Hakone Shrine itself.26

Hours and fares

The first car goes up at 9:00 and the last one up leaves at 4:30 PM; the last car down is at 4:50 PM.2 Cars run every 20 minutes, on the hour and at 20 and 40 past.2 Strong wind or thunder can stop the ropeway for safety, so check its operating status before you travel.46

A return ticket costs 2,200 yen for adults and 1,100 yen for elementary school children; one way costs 1,300 yen and 650 yen.2 Adult fares apply from junior high school age.47 These are the operator's regular fares from its Japanese fare table, read on 22 October 2026.2

Dogs can ride the ropeway in a pet carrier, and the operator lends 5 carriers for small dogs free of charge.194849 That is a contrast with the pirate ships, which pets cannot board.20

Getting to Hakone-en

Hakone-en sits on the east shore between Togendai and Moto-Hakone. The Izu-Hakone bus takes about 1 hour 20 minutes from Odawara and about 1 hour 5 minutes from Hakone-Yumoto.50 The Hakone Free Pass does not cover the Izu-Hakone Bus.51 Coming from the pirate ships, the usual link is the bus from Togendai at the north end, a short ride away.

With the pass, Odakyu Hakone suggests the Hakone Tozan Bus T line from Hakone-Yumoto to Togendai, about 34 minutes, and then the Odakyu Hakone Highway Bus W line to Hakone-en.52 Togendai's bus platform 3 serves Hakone-en.9 From Shinjuku, the Odakyu Hakone Highway Bus to Hakone-en takes about 2 hours 25 minutes.53

By car there are 294 spaces at Hakone-en, at 1,000 yen per visit, or 1,200 yen on weekends, holidays and in busy periods.54 The pirate ships call only at Togendai, Hakone-machi-ko and Moto-Hakone-ko, while the Hakone Tourist Association lists Hakone-en among the ports of the lake's leisure boats.5556

More to do at Hakone-en

The lakeside resort around the base station has its own sights. Hakone-en Aquarium stands 723 m above sea level, higher than any other seawater aquarium in Japan, and keeps Baikal seals and penguins among its residents.5758

From Hakone-en a motorboat runs to Kuzuryu Shrine Hongu on the lakeshore. A return trip costs 2,200 yen for adults, including entry to Hakone Kuzuryu no Mori, the forest around the shrine.22 On foot the shrine is about 30 minutes from the Togendai bus stop, with no bus stop nearby.29

Kuzuryu, the dragon deity, is the guardian of Lake Ashi, and Hakone Shrine worships it at the lakeshore shrine and beside its own main hall.25 With the summit shrine, that gives you three shrines on one side of the lake, reachable by ropeway and boat. A morning on the water, an afternoon on the summit and a boat to the dragon shrine make a full day on this side of the lake without riding the classic loop at all.

Fitting it into a cruise day

The Komagatake ropeway is a half-day add-on rather than part of the classic loop. The simplest plan is to finish the loop at Togendai, take the bus from platform 3 to Hakone-en, ride up and down, and come back the same way.9 Keep the last car down at 4:50 PM in mind.2

Seen from the cruise, Komagatake is the broad, bare-topped mountain above the east shore, and the Hakone Tourist Association describes it as grassy because of the wind.10 Spotting it from the deck is a good way to decide whether the summit is clear enough to be worth the ride. If cloud sits on the top, the ride is still pleasant, but the deck loses most of what makes it special, so keep the ticket money for another day.

If you are on the coach day sold on this site, your ropeway may be this one or the Hakone Ropeway, depending on the schedule. Either route ends at the lake, where the cruise ticket included in the tour takes you across.
