What the crossing costs

The Hakone pirate ship ticket price is set by Odakyu Hakone, the company that runs the boats, and it rose on 1 October 2025. Since then a one-way adult ticket between Togendai at the north end of Lake Ashi and either Moto-Hakone-ko or Hakone-machi-ko in the south costs 1,700 yen, and a child of elementary school age pays 850 yen.1 Before the change the same crossing cost 1,200 yen.7 We read these fares on Odakyu Hakone's fare page on 22 October 2026; check that page again before you travel.1

The short hop between the two southern ports, Hakone-machi-ko and Moto-Hakone-ko, is far cheaper at 600 yen for adults and 300 yen for children.8 A return ticket that brings you back to where you boarded costs 3,000 yen for adults and 1,300 yen for children.2 Adult fares apply from junior high school age, so a junior high student already pays the full fare.1

GetYourGuide does not sell a standalone cruise ticket. You buy it at the port, cover it with the Hakone Freepass, or join a day tour that includes it. The coach day this site is built around lists a ticket for the Lake Ashi cruise among its inclusions, together with the Hakone Ropeway ticket and a bullet train ticket back to Tokyo, from $153.

Three ports and which one to choose

The ships link the ports of Togendai, Moto-Hakone-ko and Hakone-machi-ko. In Hakone, Togendai is the northern terminal, where the cruise entrance and ticket counter sit on floor B2F and the Hakone Ropeway platform two floors up on 2F.1014 Walking from the boat to the ropeway entrance takes about 3 minutes inside the same building.15 That is why Togendai is the natural place to board if you arrive over the mountain from Owakudani.

Moto-Hakone-ko sits on the eastern bay near Hakone Shrine and has its own ticket counter, a waiting area and a shop.1617 Its information center also sells the Hakone Freepass and Hakone Tozan Bus tickets.18 Hakone-machi-ko, a little further south, is the port beside Onshi Hakone Park and the Hakone Checkpoint, and it sells tickets toward both Togendai-ko and Moto-Hakone-ko.1920

Odakyu Hakone numbers the ports like stations: OH 65 for Togendai, OH 66 for Hakone-machi-ko and OH 67 for Moto-Hakone-ko.5 Those codes are what you see on signs and in the route search, so they are worth knowing if you read little Japanese. The map further down this page shows all three ports and the stations that feed them.

How long the ships take and when they sail

Odakyu Hakone gives about 25 to 35 minutes for a one-way crossing between Togendai and either southern port, and about 70 to 90 minutes for a return.34 Its overview page states the range a little wider, at about 25 to 40 minutes, so allow for the longer end when you plan a connection.28 Boarding opens about 5 to 10 minutes before departure and staff guide you onto the ship.11

The full Hakone pirate ship schedule changes with the season, and Odakyu Hakone publishes it per port on Hakone Navi rather than as one fixed table. The important switch is the winter timetable, which runs from 1 December to 19 March and makes some crossings take longer.29 The boats sail every day of the year, but fog or strong wind can change a route or stop a sailing; rain on its own does not.930

If you plan to connect with the Hakone Ropeway at Togendai, remember that the gondolas run from 9:00 to 17:00 between February and November and only until 16:15 in December and January.31 On a winter afternoon the ropeway, not the boat, is often the tighter deadline. Check the operating status on the morning you travel, because Odakyu Hakone posts suspensions there first.

The player stays dark and sends nothing to YouTube until you start it.

Buying a ticket at the port

You do not need to book a normal crossing. Only groups of 15 or more can make reservations, so individual travelers simply buy at the counter of the port they leave from.48 The counters take major credit cards and the PASMO and Suica transit cards, which saves a hunt for cash on a busy holiday.49

A one-way ticket is valid for one day, and with a one-way ticket you cannot get off at a port partway along the route.50 If you want to stop at Moto-Hakone-ko for Hakone Shrine and then carry on to Hakone-machi-ko, either buy two short tickets or use a pass that allows unlimited rides. A bicycle can come aboard for a special luggage fare of 850 yen, but space for bikes is limited.51

For travelers arriving by car there is parking at every port: about 40 paid spaces at Togendai-ko, about 200 free spaces at Hakone-machi-ko and about 60 paid spaces at Moto-Hakone-ko.52 Coin lockers are inside the Togendai terminal and at the bus platform in front of Moto-Hakone-ko, which helps if you are carrying bags between hotels.53

The special cabin and what it adds

Each ship has a special cabin that you can use for a surcharge on top of the normal fare. On the legs to and from Togendai the extra charge is 800 yen for adults and 400 yen for children; between the two southern ports it is 240 yen and 120 yen.21 On a return ticket the special cabin adds 1,480 yen for adults.2

Special cabin tickets are sold only on the day, at the ticket window of the port where you board, and they cannot be reserved.25 In return you get a separate boarding line and board first, which matters at busy times when the open decks fill quickly.26 Seats inside are not assigned, so arriving early still pays off.54

Hakone Freepass holders pay a discounted price for the special cabin, because the pass itself covers only the normal cabin.556 On the Victory, Freepass users get 100 yen off for adults and 50 yen off for children on the cabin surcharge.56 Our page on the ships explains how the cabins differ from ship to ship.

Passes that cover the cruise

Several passes include the boats. The Hakone Freepass covers the Hakone Tozan Railway, the cable car, the Hakone Ropeway, the cruise and buses in designated areas, all as often as you like during its validity.23 It costs 6,000 yen for adults for two days from Odawara, so it pays off quickly once the ropeway and the boat are both on your list.40

If you are driving to Hakone and want only the lake and the ropeway, Odakyu Hakone sells a one-day Sightseeing Cruise and Ropeway Pass for 5,000 yen for adults and 1,400 yen for children.24 Its own example course with both costs 6,000 yen at regular fares.57 The ASHINOKO 2-Day Pass pairs the Tozan bus with the cruise and is aimed at visitors heading straight to the lake and Hakone Shrine.58

There is no road route across the water that matches the boat. Odakyu Hakone notes that the Odakyu Highway Bus W Route from Togendai-ko is the alternative, but its departures are limited, so the cruise is the practical way across during its operating hours.59 Our Hakone Free Pass page works through whether the full pass suits your day.

Getting to the ports by bus

From Hakone-Yumoto Station, the gateway on the Odakyu line, the Hakone Tozan Bus Togendai Line, marked T, reaches Togendai in about 40 minutes.42 Buses on the H Line take about 40 minutes to Hakone-machi-ko and the R Line about 25 minutes.12 For Moto-Hakone-ko there is also the K Line along the old Tokaido road, at about 35 minutes.13

Moto-Hakone-ko is also the stop for the direct Ashinoko Liner to Hakone-Yumoto Station, for which you need a Liner ticket on top of your fare.60 From Hakone-machi-ko the Tokai Bus runs to Mishima Station by way of the Mishima Skywalk, which makes the southern port a good exit toward the Shinkansen on the Shizuoka side.61

All three ships are barrier-free, each port lends one wheelchair free of charge, and every ship has toilets including accessible ones.6263 There is no restaurant on board, only drinks and snacks, so eat at the port or before you set off.64
